Why Measuring SHBG Matters When Looking at Testosterone

When you get your testosterone levels tested, it’s important to know that not all testosterone in your blood is the same. Much of it is bound to a protein called Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG), which controls how much testosterone is actually available to your body’s tissues.Measuring just the total testosterone number doesn’t tell the full story, because high or low SHBG levels can affect how much active (free) testosterone you really have. That’s why testing SHBG alongside total testosterone gives a clearer picture of your hormone health.

At Optimal DX, we take this one step further by automatically calculating your free testosterone and bioavailable testosterone using your total testosterone, SHBG, and albumin levels. This helps healthcare practitioners better understand hormone status and tailor care specifically to you.
