AST... It's More Than A Liver Enzyme

Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is an important metabolic enzyme that is often associated with liver and gallbladder disease though it has a wide range of functions.

Since it is found in highly metabolic tissue including muscle, brain, lung, bone, pancreas, and liver, changes in blood levels may reflect issues in any of these organs and tissues.

Levels can increase with liver and gallbladder disease, muscle damage, myocardial infarction, surgery, excess exercise, alcoholism, and some medications.

Levels can be low with vitamin B6 insufficiency, severe chronic liver disease,  kidney disease, and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Research suggests that AST may be a marker of general health and should be evaluated and addressed accordingly.
