Perfumes are Not So Sweet

An extensive review examined whether perfumes and colognes can impact people’s health. It found that many of these products contain chemicals such as phthalates, parabens, and triclosan, which are used to make scents last longer or preserve the product.

These chemicals can cause a variety of health problems, including skin allergies, breathing difficulties like asthma, headaches, and even effects on the brain and nervous system.

Some studies show that exposure to these chemicals can increase the risk of serious conditions such as breast cancer, reproductive problems in men, and hormone imbalances. Children exposed to these substances before birth may be more likely to develop asthma or other health issues.

The risks vary depending on the amount of perfume used, age, gender, and other personal factors.

Perfumes don’t just affect the skin — they release many tiny chemicals into the air that can be harmful when inhaled. Around 20 to 35% of people who use perfumes or colognes report problems like asthma attacks, migraines, or skin irritation.

Not everyone experiences side effects, but the potential health risks make it important to be cautious.

Overall, the review suggests that consumers should be aware of the harmful ingredients in some fragrances. Choosing products made with safer ingredients and reducing exposure can help protect health. Scientists also recommend more research and better regulation to make these everyday products safer for everyone.
