A new study from Europe looked at whether vitamin D, omega-3 fish oils, and simple home exercises could slow down the body’s aging process. Scientists measured “biological age” — how old your body seems on the inside — using special blood tests that look at DNA changes linked to aging.
Over 700 healthy older adults, all over 70 years old, were followed for three years while taking vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, exercising, or a combination of all three.
The most important finding was that omega-3 supplements (like those found in fish oil) slowed down biological aging by a few months over three years.
On their own, vitamin D and exercise did not show strong effects, but when combined with omega-3, they gave extra benefits. In some tests, this mix helped improve markers linked to better health and lower disease risk. People who started with low omega-3 levels or who already had good vitamin D levels seemed to benefit the most.
Although the changes were small, scientists believe that even a slight slowing of aging can have big effects if it continues over time.
This research contributes to earlier findings indicating that a combination of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and exercise may collectively help reduce falls, frailty, and even cancer risk in older adults. In short, maintaining healthy habits like good nutrition and regular physical activity may not only protect against disease but also help your body age more slowly at the cellular level.
