Could Lithium Help Protect Your Brain?

In fact, people with Alzheimer’s disease tend to have lower levels of lithium in key areas of the brain.

What Happens When Lithium Is Low?

When lithium levels drop, it may affect the brain in several ways. In animal studies, low lithium was linked to:

  • More buildup of harmful proteins (like amyloid and tau)

  • Increased brain inflammation

  • Loss of important brain connections

  • Faster memory decline

These changes are commonly seen in Alzheimer’s disease.

Can Alzheimer’s “Trap” Lithium?

Researchers found something surprising—lithium can get trapped inside amyloid plaques in the brain.
