Blood Triglycerides Interfere with Lab Results

Several lab tests provide us with valuable information about the body’s function and dysfunction. However, the results of many of these tests can be altered when fats known as triglycerides are too high in the blood.

Triglyceride levels can increase after a high-fat meal. That is why fasting for at least 8-12 hours prior to lab testing is so important.

However, triglycerides can be elevated despite fasting when genetic factors or metabolic factors, such as diabetes mellitus, are present.

Biomarkers Affected by Elevated Triglycerides:

Glucose and Renal Function Tests
  • Glucose
  • Urea
  • Creatinine
  • Uric acid
Liver Function Tests
  • Total protein
  • Albumin
  • Total bilirubin
  • Direct bilirubin
  • AST (Aspartate transaminase)
  • ALT (Alanine transaminase)
  • ALP (Alkaline phosphatase)
  • GGT (Gamma-glutamyl transferase)
Electrolytes and Minerals
  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Chloride
  • Calcium
  • Phosphorus
  • Magnesium
