Optimal Takeaways

The lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) enzyme is active in the presence of oxidized lipoprotein compounds and atherosclerotic plaque.

Increasing levels suggest an increasing risk of oxidative damage, vascular inflammation, blood clots, and cardiovascular disease. It can also be associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes.

Blood levels of Lp-PLA2 increase as the severity of atherosclerosis increases. Lp-PLA2 activity in the blood can also be measured and maybe the most valuable for assessing cardiometabolic risk.
