Assessing the ratio of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) to aspartate aminotransferase (AST) provides metabolic clues.
These enzymes help convert amino acids into glucose. An elevation in ALT tends to be more specific to the liver, and as the ALT:AST ratio increases, it may mean worsening glucose tolerance, organ dysfunction, and increased risk of non-alcoholic liver disease, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
