The ALT:AST Ratio and Metabolic Clues

Assessing the ratio of the alanine aminotransferase (ALT) to aspartate aminotransferase enzyme (AST) provides us with metabolic clues.

These enzymes help convert amino acids into glucose. An elevation in ALT tends to be more specific to the liver, and as the ALT:AST ratio increases, it may mean worsening glucose tolerance, organ dysfunction, and increased risk of non-alcoholic liver disease, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
