Methylmalonic Acid Can Be a Headache

Written by ODX Admin | Jun 16, 2023 8:40:00 PM

Methylmalonic acid (MMA) is linked to vitamin B12 insufficiency and can also indicate issues such as oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. It is not a standalone biomarker for B12 deficiency and should be assessed alongside other biomarkers.

Elevated MMA is associated with health problems like renal dysfunction, diabetes, neuropathy, migraines, and increased mortality risk. A low MMA generally means sufficient vitamin B12 levels.

High MMA levels can be related to a variety of factors, including B12 insufficiency, kidney disease, metformin use, and migraines. MMA can be an early indicator of B12 insufficiency and is formed when a lack of vitamin B12 impairs specific enzymes in the body.
