Could Vitamin C Help Ease Anxiety?

Vitamin C helps the brain produce and manage important neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers that allow nerve cells to communicate. One of its jobs is helping convert dopamine into norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters involved in mood, attention, and the body's response to stress.

Vitamin C also helps regulate communication pathways involving dopamine and glutamate and supports the release of neurotransmitters from nerve cells.

Protecting Brain Cells

In addition to supporting neurotransmitters, vitamin C acts as a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by oxidative stress.

Research suggests that vitamin C may help protect brain tissue from injury and defend nerve cells against excessive glutamate stimulation, a process that can contribute to neuronal damage.

What Does the Research Show?

Early human studies suggest vitamin C may help reduce anxiety in some people.

In one study, high school students who took 500 mg of vitamin C daily for two weeks experienced lower anxiety levels compared with those taking a placebo.

Another study found that a single 1,000 mg dose of vitamin C did not reduce anxiety in the entire study group. However, participants who started the study with the highest anxiety levels experienced significant improvements after taking vitamin C.
